Service Overview
About this Service
Overview of Import Export Code (IEC) Registration
The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit unique identifier issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), mandatory for any person or entity engaged in importing or exporting goods and services from India. Since 2017, the IEC has been harmonized with the PAN (Permanent Account Number), meaning the IEC number is identical to the business PAN, though a separate application must still be filed with DGFT. This one-time registration remains valid for lifetime unless surrendered or revoked, though annual updates are required between April-June.
IEC serves as the primary key for customs clearance, foreign remittances, and DGFT incentive schemes. Without a valid IEC, goods cannot clear customs, and exporters cannot access MEIS (Merchandise Exports from India Scheme) or SEIS (Service Exports from India Scheme) benefits. The online application through DGFT's ANF-2A form requires PAN, address proof, bank account details, and a nominal fee of ₹500. Processing typically occurs within 3-7 working days, with the certificate issued electronically.
IEC holders must link their code with the Import Data Processing and Monitoring System (IDPMS) and Export Data Processing and Monitoring System (EDPMS) through ICEGATE for foreign exchange compliance. The code enables exporters to claim GST refunds on input taxes, access export credit guarantees, and participate in export promotion council activities. Certain categories including government ministries and charitable institutions for personal use imports are exempt from IEC requirements.
Who Should Opt for This Service?
- Manufacturers exporting finished goods to international markets
- Trading companies importing raw materials or finished products
- E-commerce sellers shipping products to customers abroad
- Service exporters providing IT, consulting, or professional services overseas
- Import-dependent businesses sourcing components from foreign suppliers
- Export houses and merchant exporters acting as intermediaries
Note: IEC holders must update their details annually on the DGFT portal between April 1 and June 30; failure to update results in automatic deactivation of the IEC, blocking all import-export activities.

Contact our support teamIEC is a 10-digit unique identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) required for importing or exporting goods and services from India. Any person or business engaged in international trade, except for certain exempted categories, must obtain IEC.
Yes, IEC is mandatory for all import and export transactions except for personal use imports, government departments, and certain notified categories. Banks require IEC for processing foreign remittances related to trade. Without IEC, customs will not clear imported or exported goods.
IEC enables businesses to expand globally, avail export incentives, claim duty drawbacks, access government export promotion schemes, establish credibility with international buyers, and open foreign currency accounts. It is also required for various export certifications and registrations.
IEC is valid for lifetime unless surrendered or revoked. However, IEC holders must update their details annually on the DGFT portal between April and June. Failure to update may result in deactivation of the IEC until the update is completed.
Both individuals and business entities can apply for IEC. Individuals (proprietors), partnerships, companies, LLPs, trusts, and societies are all eligible. The application process and requirements are similar, though entity-specific documents vary.
Required documents include PAN card, address proof (utility bill or rent agreement), bank account proof (cancelled cheque), passport size photograph, and entity registration documents (partnership deed, incorporation certificate, etc.). All documents must be self-attested.
Yes, if a business ceases import-export activities, the IEC can be surrendered to DGFT. IEC may also be cancelled or suspended for violations of foreign trade policy, fraudulent activities, or non-compliance with regulations. Surrendered IECs cannot be reactivated.
The government fee for IEC application is minimal (currently ₹500). However, professional fees may apply if using consultants. The fee must be paid online through the DGFT portal during application submission.
No, a single PAN can have only one IEC. If you operate multiple businesses under different names but the same PAN, you must use the same IEC for all. Separate IECs are only permitted for separate legal entities with different PANs.
IEC is the importer-exporter identification number issued by DGFT, while AD Code (Authorized Dealer Code) is a 14-digit code issued by banks where foreign exchange transactions are handled. Both are required for customs clearance and export benefits.
