Overview of Revised Income Tax Return

Section 139(5) of the Income Tax Act allows taxpayers to file revised returns to correct errors or omissions in originally filed returns. Revised returns can be filed up to three months before the end of the relevant assessment year or before completion of assessment, whichever is earlier (for AY 2025-26, deadline is December 31, 2025). This provision enables rectification of mistakes in income reporting, deduction claims, or tax calculations without penalty for bonafide errors.

The revised return is filed using the same ITR form as the original, with the "Revised Return" option selected and original return acknowledgement number quoted. All details must be filled afresh; the revised return supersedes the original entirely. Common revisions include correcting income under wrong heads, claiming missed deductions, rectifying bank account details for refunds, and correcting personal information.

Revised returns are treated as fresh filings for assessment purposes and may be selected for scrutiny. They cannot be filed after the deadline, though belated returns can be revised within the same timeline. For returns filed after the due date (belated returns), revision is permitted within the original revision deadline. Updated returns (ITR-U) under Section 139(8A) allow filing up to 24 months from assessment year end with additional tax.

Who Should Opt for This Service?

  • Taxpayers discovering errors in income reporting after filing
  • Individuals missing deduction claims (80C, 80D, HRA) in original returns
  • Assessees correcting incorrect bank account details for refunds
  • Businesses rectifying turnover or expense reporting errors
  • Taxpayers correcting residential status or personal information
  • Entities rectifying TDS credit mismatches or advance tax claims

Note: Revised returns must be filed before the deadline and before assessment completion; filing revised returns does not protect against penalties if the original return contained concealment or misrepresentation of income.

A revised return is filed under Section 139(5) to correct errors or omissions in the originally filed return. It allows taxpayers to rectify mistakes in income reporting, deductions, tax calculations, or personal details. The revised return replaces the original return completely.

Revised returns must be filed before the end of the relevant assessment year or before completion of assessment, whichever is earlier. For example, for FY 2023-24 (AY 2024-25), the deadline is March 31, 2025, or earlier if assessment is completed.

Errors that can be corrected include unreported income, missed deductions, incorrect bank details, wrong personal information, errors in TDS credit, incorrect tax computation, and unclaimed exemptions. However, filing a revised return to conceal income may attract penalties.

Yes, belated returns (filed after the due date but before the end of the assessment year) can also be revised. Both original and belated returns can be revised multiple times until the deadline, though it is advisable to file accurately to avoid scrutiny.

No, there is no specific penalty for filing revised returns. However, if the revision results in additional tax liability, interest under Sections 234A, 234B, and 234C may be applicable. If the revision is to conceal income or evade tax, penalties under Section 270A may apply.

The revised return supersedes the original return completely. The original return is deemed withdrawn, and the revised return is treated as the valid return for all purposes. The acknowledgment of the revised return becomes the primary document.

Yes, if the revision results in overpayment of tax, a refund can be claimed. The refund will be processed based on the revised return. Ensure bank account details are correct in the revised return for smooth refund processing.

Yes, revised returns must be e-verified like original returns within 120 days of filing. E-verification can be done through Aadhaar OTP, net banking, bank ATM, or by sending signed ITR-V to CPC. Without verification, the revised return is not valid.

If the assessment is completed before filing the revised return, the revision is not valid. The taxpayer must file a rectification request under Section 154 (for apparent mistakes) or an appeal before the Commissioner (Appeals) if they disagree with the assessment.

Revised returns can only be filed within the time limit specified under Section 139(5) - before the end of the assessment year or before completion of assessment. Returns for years where the assessment year has ended cannot be revised; other remedies like rectification or appeal must be pursued.
